Friday August 29th at 6.30pm (doors 6.00pm) at Alan Baxter’s Gallery, Farringdon, London
ESCAPING INTO EXOTICISM.......
Take a trip with us through Moorish palaces, Spanish courtyards, Italian piazzas, all under fantasy starry skies that only movie palaces could create to attract their audiences.
Mike Hume’s lavishly-illustrated talk will take us on a fascinating journey through the world of Atmospheric theatres, a movie theatre design style aimed to create the feeling of open-air cinema popularised in the United States in the mid-1920s and which spread in small pockets to all corners of the world (including the UK).
Mike is a former Chairman of the globally-respected Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation, which advocates for the reuse and reinvention of historic theatres. Mike’s exhaustive study of atmospheric theatres around the world makes him the go-to speaker on this topic. We are fortunate to have him with us from America for this unique exploration of a short-lived but glorious expression of the fantasy worlds created for moviegoers. We will also hear about their architects and look at their technical design.
This event is organised by Richard Norman.
